Stopping Tai Chi

After some long hard considerations, I've decided to stop going to tai chi lessons. for now.  The fee is RM38 a month for minimum of 2 lessons a week but I only attend once a month these days, I used to attend very diligently every Mon, Tues and early Sun morning.  Not anymore.  Monetarily it's not worthwhile and I'd like to free myself from the emotional guilt of skipping classes so often.

It is best to stop...for now..I may return when I rediscover the passion once again....may be when I am 50 :D
and when I am less distracted by other much more dynamic sports..hehe.  Well, I can actually continue to practice on my own..I've learn enough to do it on my own..I'd better start before I forget everything.  Patience...and a peace of mind...is all I need.  Can I have that for at least 10-20 mins in a day?

Now ..I have more free time..what shall I do with the free time :)

Yes. I'm learning tai chi.

A young colleague saw this on my dashboard today.

He went ...

"huh...you learning tai chi? no right?"

I said "yes" grinning sheepishly.

He went..

"HA? my father learns taichi wor"

-.-

Since I'm at it..a little update about my "progress"
To be honest I've slacked ..a whole lot lately.
My attendance is down to once a month most of the time from previously three times a week.

But ..I don't intend to stop.  It's such a waste to stop now after investing so much patience building up that little bit of foundation.

Basically, I've  been slacking because of all the distractions from my other new hobbies..from bodycombat to RPM at the gym to this new found hobby called..running.

Comparatively, tai chi is so boring. I admit. No upbeat music.  It's slow. Very slow.  So much theory..and our moves will never be perfect. Never.

However, it has it's goodness and I still enjoy doing it..if I do it properly.  I've missed too many classes that I'm having such a hard time catching up : (

My retirement hobby..it will be :D

Tai Chi-ed

Finally.  I went back to tai chi.  For one class at least.  Well ..it's good start :p  I feel great now.  Tai chi really helps to relax and de-stress very effectively.  I was in such a bad mood today that the littlest thing irritates me.  well..this little darling also cheered me up a little.

Back to tai chi.  Ya..it was a good one.  Surprisingly, I could still remember most of the moves.  Ehh...actually I did forget some parts...as early as during the warm up session :p  Guess what..at one point I even got mixed up with body combat moves ..hahahha.  But overall..it wasn't that bad.  Feels good to be back.  Hope I won't slack again,.

Oh ya..I also forgot how much is the monthly fee.

Perhimpunan Seni Bela Diri 1Malaysia

I was here...!
Event brief according to the Culture & Arts Ministry:

*Summary in English - it's basically an event to gather all martial artists in the country. Aprroximately 5,000 participants from SIlat, Wushu, Silamban, Tae Kwon do, etc..a good representation of Malaysia's multi racial society*

Ahem..
me = pahlawan / mahaguru?

Everything is 1Malaysia....our new PM's latest initiative. Does anyone know what is 1Malaysia actually?

Confession : In my 30 odd years as a Malaysian..this is my 1st time stepping on Dataran Merdeka (our very own Independence Square). Above..I must say the SUltan Abdul Samad Building is quite beautiful. That's the...err..'independence clock"?

Two tourists from China were asking me questions I couldn't answer :D What's this building? And that building? Err..previous High Court?

So..I was there..part of the national's martial arts gathering ...because I'm part of the above...*ahem*

I admit..this is my first time being part of something like this..even as a student I've never participate in any gathering or event of this sort. A different experience I must say. Thankfully the weather wasn't very sunny. It became windy when we were performing..so it was actually somewhat 'cool' ...like in the movies ..wind blowing our hair & the kung fu music and all :DDD

Here are more random shots ... for fun viewing..

My cool seniors were chit chatting ...

while....these youngsters were busy preparing..

all...very young except us *blink blink*

Camera man from RTM....it started to rain right after the event ended.

Oh..by the way..the toilets are very clean & well maintained. Impressive.

Malaysia...boleh?

Mari Kita Ber-tai chi

Wanna see me tai-ci-ing? Try to spot me in the following event :D

haha...

Don't fall off your chair first..I only got involve by chance.

Too sleepy to go into details. Net net..I will be there ..amongst hundreds or may be thousands of 'martial artists'...macam macam ada..tae kwon do, karate, silat, etc etc..tai chi was categorised with karate, tao kwon do and a few others....and we were given a segment length about 6 minutes to perform to a pre-determined tune.

The tune sounded something like the Wong Fei Hung song ~ hahahahha. I'm serious. No joke. Anyway..for some reasons I'm not sure of ..we only found out all these details on last Sunday. Practiced a little bit on Monday and then tomorrow. Full dress rehearsal at 4pm, Saturday ...an hour before the real thing o.O

Speaking of full dress. We have to wear our own uniform. I just got to know that our uniform is black shoe :p So..I can't wear my white nike nor green puma :DDD

Had to go and buy a pair of ...not so nice black shoe.

Tai chi when it is not slow

Quite a few have asked me..why do I learn tai ci when it is so slow and boring.

Here is a demo I recorded quite some time ago. See above..it is not always slow ..you know?

As I said many times .. tai chi requires a lot of patience and depth. Was telling WK the other night..I was distracted quite a bit ever since I started joining active group classes at the gym, however I'm still determined to continue for as long as I can. As long as I live ..I hope.

The above may look 'fake'. Trust me..it's real. And he had not even release 100% strength..if he did..the 'opponent' would have flew out the window!

Learning tai ci is almost a lifetime process. No one dares claim to have learnt and master everything. If I may say..you don't stop learning until you die.

I've been so called learning for more than two years...mind me...I seriously believe that I only know about 0.01% of all there is to learn!

No doubt..I've learnt all the steps of the "four subsets of the short set" ..one of the very first things taught to newbies. Oh before that..we must learn the five 'warm up exercises'...that itself took us like two months..now you know why I kept saying tai chi needs loads of patience. FYI..we still can't do the warm up exercises Correctly!

I've also learnt the steps of the Cane (tongkat).

Sounds like a lot...but knowing the steps versus doing it correctly vs doing it with depth and heart makes a difference.

Ok..I won't bore you with more details. In case you are wondering...there are many more stuff to learn..e.g. the long set, there's something called the 'kwan tou' (i.e. knife), the sword, the stick....etc etc etc.

But then again...doing it correctly and with depth matters. One may know all..but if he/she merely runs through the steps without proper execution...it defeats the purpose.''

You can ask me again in 10 years time...to see how far I progressed :)

Another Long Weekend

Howdy. How was your weekend? It's long weekend again for us here in M'sia :)
I'm watching the All England badminton singles finals clash between M'sia's LCW and China's Lin Dan. As usual...I personally don't like LCW ..so I don't really want him to win :p

I have a packet of ice on the ankle now. The doctor had told me many many times to do this after exercise..but I think its so troublesome to do.

..make sure you have ice in the fridge before you go out
..come back..take out ice..put in a bag
..iced !

...that was his answer each time..when i say it is ma fan.

Think I'd better do it diligently.. don't want to spend so much money keep visiting the doctor for treatments. Worse still..i don't want to the injury to get worse.

I was actually going to say that it is much better today and I enjoyed my work out alot more today...in fact..i really did. But..after returning from an afternoon with dad..usual walkabout to the hypermarket...i was suddenly limping *frown* Now..you know why..I am icing it :)

Ok..enough about the sickening ankle. Been talking about it in almost every single post. Sian.

Before I start talking trash again...let me quickly note that..we, the Huang Tai Chi Kepong branch had our first gathering on Saturday. Main agenda was the 'oath taking' ceremony by the newly 'elected' committee members..yea...so serious wan. The national chief instructor, the national chairman and some other national committee members are in town ..so it was a pleasure to meet them and to have them them attend our little event. Meeting and listening to them reminded me why I am learning the art...and why I should stay on despite...ocassional laziness and I will be lying if I say that I don't find it boring. Especially now I have developed more interest for body combat and RPM which are much much more addictive, fun, fun, fun, fun..whilst tai chi is in-depth, serious...slow..serious..slow...serious..serious...erm..can't think other words to describe it :)

Demo by chief instructor..he is 70+ fast approaching 80

That was Saturday. Sunday coming to an end. What's for tomorrow? Levi's having a sale! *BLINK BLINK* All my old jeans are loose :p The new Levi's that I bought (about 6 mths ago)..may also be over size soon :D..shall I take this opportunity to get another pair??

Lin Dan won! wooo hoo...did you notice he hangs a cute soft toy that looks like a mouse on his sports bag? So cute! I mean...it doesn't seem like him..to carry such thing..may be a good luck gift from his girlfriend...
Oh ya...just found out that another friend also had food poisoning few days ago. This is like the 4th person in the past week down with food poisoning. Mag was asking me..is there something wrong with m'sian food??
I wonder too. Luckily..mine wasn't that serious although I still get ocassional random cramps till today.

Web Withdrawal Syndrome

I'm so seriously suffering from web withdrawal syndrome. Since I haven't bought the notebook...I have no internet access at home. So itchy without having access without the www. At my bro's house now to get my internet fix. But..lil Danial is driving me nuts..but then he is really lovalbe most of the time. Tried to help him fix-up this human skeleton and all the internal organs..both of us lost patience. I think he knew more than me :p

Don't really hv anything to blog brag about ..jus gotta kill tat itch.

I had the weirdest Friday nite..this is going to be confusing..I stil am. G caught me online and asked me if I am going to Waikiki with F. I had no idea wat she was talking about. I sms-ed F and F was surprised I know abt the impromptu plan she had with S. Anyway..I decided to meetup with G anyway..since she sounded stressed out. Informed M since she stays nearby. Surprisingly...M will be in Waikiki too..with her friends! In the end..G, myself, F and N ended up in the same place..by coincindence!

Washed the car finally..and the sky is dark! It's going to pour. Rainy season ka? It's been pouring every other day.

Tired...err...becos I've been working out. I know I know..I shouldn't. Only RPM ma. I think I irritated the tai ci teacher today..cos he discovered that I don't know all the moves by heart :p Yea..I got distracted..ever since I fell in love with body combat. It's quite difficult to adjust doing both. I tried to do 'light' BC this morning after 'resting' for 3 days *blink* Did the taping as taught..as closely as I can remember...looked awful...but the support was good. Still can't execute most of the moves that require ankle strength :( though.

It's really raining!

Gotta run but then how to go home when it's pouring! I hope my dad will help me bring in the clothes. I also left the his dog and the male cat roamed free in the garden before I left the house..old man's gonna freak!

Wonder what I should have for dinner tonite. Tummy discomfort for past few days. No fun at all.

Body Combat vs. Tai Chi

WK's comments on my 'Mad Driver' entry prompted me to have a quick write on this topic. At this juncture, I'm not sure how exactly I am going about this. Let me have a try...will delete if the end result is rubbish.

Well, I realised that I tend to be a more impatient these days. As WK puts it..blood seems to be boiling faster than usual. I felt so bad yesterday..for slamming the washing machine so hard all because my dad was nagging behind my back while I was doing the laundry. I AM SORRY!

I've been wondering if I've been confusing myself mentally by juggling the two activities. Tai chi is serious & slow and requires alot of calmness and concentration while Body Combat gets the adrenalin pumping and is physically demanding & loads of fun. My 'schedule' as follows:

  • monday - TC
  • tuesday - BC
  • wednesday - REST
  • thursday - BC then TC
  • friday - REST (sometimes go BC if I have absolutely nothing to do)
  • saturday - free n easy (can be anything - from doing nothing to badminton to eating or to the gym)
  • sunday - TC then BC

I admit that I enjoy BC more than TC...after all I am still young ma. Of course, I'd prefer something that is fast and furious. As I've said many times....TC is a long term investment that I hope to see some 'returns' in 5-10 years time. Hence, it will naturally require some discipline and sacrifices along the way.

Now..did I get you all confused with all this BC and TC mentions....

So..is there any scientific write up to prove that mixing the two can affect mental 'stability' ah? If you come across any..do share with me :)

Pondering again..

Today was a pretty quiet day for me...was in quite a somber mood pondering again ..until Mag came online and got me all entertained & tickled with her ever so exciting stories and "future plans". Now..I can't find the mood to start this :) Let me try slowly..to get back into the mood.

I can't believe we are approaching the end of 2008! I barely did anything! What a waste of time! The good thing about keeping a blog or diary is that it is easy to flasback on events and happenings over time. With blogs it is even easier..can click by month, events, etc. For the records, I started blogging in July 2005! Three long years liao! Wa lau eh!

Oh ya..discovered facebook in July 2007..still loving it. It is a great way to re-connect with old friends. May not be active all the the time...but at least the 'connections' are there Linked provided the other party logs on regularly lar. Just 2 days ago I re-connected with an old friend (Jordan) whom I met in secondary school..and found out that he has one existing mutual friend with me and 2 other which I also knew and will add on soon! What a small world.

So..back to me and my boring life. Yep..have not done much this year. Did a quick check on my past entries here....almost ZERO in 2008. Pathetic compared to previous years. Not that previous years were great but..relatively 2008 is lousy man!

TRAVEL
Only made it to Langkawi in July this year. I realised that my travelling destinations gets more pathetic as I age. Watch this:

  • Y2000 @ Vancouver, Canada (cousin's wedding)
  • Y2002 @ Bangkok, Thailand (brother's wedding)
  • Y2003 @ Nepal
  • Y2004 @ Hong Kong & Taman Negara, Malaysia
  • Y2005 @ Bali, Indonesia
  • Y2006 @ Taipei, Taiwan & Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia
  • Y2007 @ Beijing, China & casual drive to North Peninsular Malaysia
  • Y2008 @ Langkawi, Malaysia

See what I mean??

We were eyeing Egypt after Nepal ..way back then...by now..cannot afford liao. Commitments lar! Those days free n easy..no home loan..still young..supposedly well paid executive. Easily bought 80K car (2nd car some more) and branded watch without an eye blink. Now..wanna buy Nike shoe also count fingers for so long -_-

Other "Worth Mentioning' Events

  • April 2005 - Nephew Danial born
  • January 2007 - Endometriotic cyst surgery
  • April 2007 - Lasik surgery

Other Leisure Activities

  • Y2005 - Joined a gym
  • Y2006 - Started learning Tai Ci
  • Y2007 - Took Personal Training at gym (*eyes rolling*)
  • Y2008 - Fell in love with Body Combat (*more eyes rolling*)
Only consolation is..I am STILL doing all the above activities...I mean..still gym going and tai ci - ing. Was telling Mag..If I am picked..I may even go for instructorship trainng (tai ci) in 3-4 years time (*more more eyes rolling*)

That's 3-4 years time..meanwhile what do I do to spice up my life??

Connected & Hooked

I am connected! So, here I am practically glued to the internet . FYI - My little house here has wireless streamyx access but had been without a PC nor notebook ever since my brother moved out :D I didn't wanna get another machine cos' this is exactly what I don't wanna end up doing at home - hooked on the net. I have not even read the newspaper today!

(Watching Amazing Race Asia as I am typing this. I jus love this season's TARA! Allan Wu - dashingly handsome, I just noticed that his face is all over True Fitness and I'd always thought he is one of the instructors not having a slightest idea that it was Allan Wu :D)

My day was productive (before I got connected). I managed to get to the gym in the morning and attended the new quarter body combat launch (1st time for me). It was simply awesome. Will try and check around if I can get any link to some pictures of the event. (Les Mills releases new music & choreography for their licensed exercise programmes every three months).

After gym, fixed some connection problems with the TV (with my dad hovering over my back..arghh), had lunch with dad, stocked up on dog food, went to the car wash (discovered that the Shell station that I normally go to was 'missing' - under renovation), got some groceries and..picked up this notebook from my brother's house and after that...is..me and the notebook and the net. In between, I managed get my butt up to bath the dog, did some laundry and a some maintenanc work on the car (battery water & stuff). Oh...I bathed too :)

Didn't even have a proper dinner. I was occupying the dinner table...my dad probably thought I was 'working' cos' he didn't chase me away.

TARA's over. It's midnight. Think I better log off soon. Gotta wake early tomorrow for tai chi. There's a meeting too after the class. Ya...tai chi meeting wor. They wanna set up an independent branch in Kepong (out of the WP branch). I have a strong feeling I will be pull in as one of the committee members (Hmm..) will try to stay low and wriggle out of sight. If my body's up to it,,..may go to the gym again in the evening :) Re-charge for Monday -_-

No Nike Free for me :(

Some years ago, I was having knee sores even when I was strolling in a mall in a pair Nike - took me some time to note the correlation. And I wasn't even working out actively then. Since the shoes were wearing out, I started looking out for a pair of good shoes since I was gearing myself up for active gym going. A sales rep. at the New Balance outlet (One Utama) noticed that I am actually flat footed - and explained that's possibly part of the reason for my sore knees. Convinced and satisfied...I bought a pair of New Balance and still using it now.

FYI - this NB outlet in One Utama gives all time 20% to all items to all fitness club members. Just present your membership card and you are entitled to the discount. And trust me...they know their products well. If the staff are not up to it..just refer to the boss or his wife. There is another NB outlet at The Gardens. Not sure if they offer discounts to Fitness members but the owner is also very knowledgeable and helpful in offering advice and tips. And I think..he is always there.

So..before rushing to get a pair another pair of Nike..it's sensible to check out if its suitable for my clumsy feet. Why am I not surprise..that the reps at Nike stores are not very knowledgeable. Such a reputable brand. So many outlets. And yet..no proper product training for staff? I've walked into numerous stores. Most of the time.. just hung around distance away hoping that I don't mess up their product arrangement. I tried asking about the product once in a Nike Women outlet..the staff could only tell me that Nike Free is very light! And Nike Zoom is even lighter. Ya right -- great insights! I didn't even bother bringing up the flat feet issue.

How??...I turned to the Net for information lor. Well, the brand websites were not useful at all. Came across some forums...not much info. Until.... I came across this blog named Reymond's Journal - I have no idea who he is but he had an entry about his own problem with flat feet and Nike Free back in March 07. So...I dropped him a note to ask for advice. And he replied! with a dedicated post named Best Shoes for Flat Feet :)

Conclusion - no Nike Free for me lor :(

Darn. I was hoping I can have one so that I can use for both Body Combat and Tai Chi...I read somewhere that it is designed to give an almost bare footed experience...hence, some forums actually highly recommended it for Body Combat. You see..I was trying to convince myself it is 'good value for money' if I could use it for Tai Chi too..since we are suppose to have the soles closest to the floor when tai chi-ing. Hee hee..if you check out shoes of those seasoned tai chi masters...you won't see anyone wearing branded shoes la. Only simple black canvas shoes :) Currently, I am using a trendy brown/green Puma :)))

Officially..new hobby

ok..it's official. Body Combat is my current main hobby. Am blogging this down to keep track of how long i will stick with this new found joy. Not too long ago I declared that I enjoyed tai chi after wandering around it for 2 years. I only decided to try out body combat recently after like 3 years bumming around the gym and I got hooked almost instantly. Think I didn't dare to join any Group Exercise classes then because I wasn't fit at all then and was having numerous problems with back la, knees la, etc.

I guess, body combat gets into what I've always wanted to do since I was a kid - I wanted to take up tae kwon do when I was in primary school but my dad didn't allow. His reason was because I was already such a tom boy..take martial arts i will become worse! So now...20 yrs later..I get to do unofficial martial arts for fun! Where does tai chi come in now..well, second placing lor. Tai ci..wil be for retirement practice :)

Here are some of glamorous pictures of some true fitness instructors that I found on the blogsphere.

Better Brighter Day?

Yea..the sun seems brighter today. It sure feels good when I can use my cool shades instead of the screen wiper when driving to work. And its Friday again! It MUST be a good day.

Yesterday, I left office a little early to go visit SY's dad at the hospital. He looks good, think will be discharged today. I chatted for a while and left for the gym. Had a good work out at the BC class then rushed home for tai chi :) yea..two in a row..i think my body mechanic's a bit messed up by my erratic hobby changes - fast slow fast slow :D I've also started playing 'active' badminton again with Esther on Saturdays. Ouch! More harm to the poor joints. Did I mention that my shins are aching too? *rolling my eyes*

Well.. I started tai chi becos I thought my body mechanics and fitness level were too poor to do any high impact sports. And I joined TF at Jaya so that I can do some swimming which is also low impact ma. Who knows...2 years later I am doing all this harm to my poor body. Hee hee..this only proves one thing.."when there's a will, there's a way". It's natural human behaviour....when we found interest and love for something..it is so easy to commit...and it's ever so easy to create excuses to continue to commit. If only I find a someone that I have such commitment to.

oh by the way..I just heard that KT's mom was assaulted by her 'mad' tenant yesterday! What kind of day was yesterday?? And what kind of city are we living in?? Fortunately, she was not badly harm. and..as much as I am still in shock that such an awful thing can happen to a sweet old lady that I've known for 20 years...I can't help but felt entertained (but worried) by KT's reaction. These were her words...

"...he put the metal stering lock on my mother's head and made her knee dwn asked for forgiveness. Tis part I WILL NEVER FORGIVEN him.."
Good thing is she is taking this strongly..very strongly indeed. I would have just accepted and thank God that everything's over. But..KT being KT..she is not going to let this rest until she is satisfied. Becareful there my friend.

Surprisingly I Enjoy Tai Ci now

Do you remember when I took up tai ci? I think it was about 2 yrs ago. I surprised myself that I am still into it. In fact I have grown to like it and look forward to classes. The initial lessons were such a bore...I used to yawn and yawn and kept looking at the clock waiting for class to end. A lot of people ask me why I am into such an 'old' activity at such a young age. I don't know actually.

May be I do. Well, I joined by accident..all because my sister and her neighbours were joining. But..I had always thought tai ci is about right for me because of some of the muscle and nerve problems I had. Days gone by...it's been 2 years! And I am enjoying it. I'm quite sure I will continue..in preparation for retirement :D

Seriously...tai ci is a good exercise for the old but..it is best to start at a younger age. Firstly, it's easier to pick up when one is physically stronger. Secondly and most importantly, the exercises helps the body prepare for older age..in other words..it helps us age better!

In case you are wondering..I am not as good as Jet Li and I will never be, 1-2 years in tai ci is very insignificant. My instructor is in his 50s and he started in his 20s. And there are many other seniors who started 5 , 10, 20 30 years ago. Everyone is very humble. There is no such thing is complete...and perfect..tai ci is a life long learning process. The skills just gets deeper and deeper.

Oh ya...and my health is certainly better. Fitness has definitely improved. I can now attend regular combat classes in the gym..no problem. I used to stay away from classes because I feared that I will not be able to cope.

okie dokie..am off to the gym to kick some ass!

Doing something crazy

My ex-boss wrote - about his desire to rekindle his passion for cycling although he is about 20 years older now and is also about 1.3 times in size now.

My comment to him was ...I was telling my sis recently..i am such a hopeless being. I realised long ago that i have not really done 'anythg' in my life AND to make it worse..I am not doing anything to rectify it...e.g. I don't really kow how to swim, i daren't dive, i don't rock climb, I can't really cycle, i don't travel much...i have not back paked before...and the list goes on and on..

Well..It's all about doing somethng crazy isn't it...does going for Tai Chi count?
